The title of your book or story is the readers’ first introduction to your work. Getting it right is the most critical book marketing decision you’ll make. The title forms the basis of readers’ judgment about your book. It must grab their attention right at the get-go and make them anxious to read your story. A good title strikes at the heart of the story and can even suggest future events.

A good title won’t ensure your book’s success. But an inappropriate title will prevent it from doing well.

It should be simple to find a good title– right?
Wrong! Like all the elements making up a successful story or a book, finding the perfect solution takes some effort.

How to choose your title

• Include keywords describing your most important event, person, or idea
• Find unique words for your title
• Google “Book title generators” to help in the search
• Study titles of other memoirs for ideas
• Is the title catchy and easy to remember?
• Is it engaging, strong, distinctive, interesting, and gripping?
• Do you need a subtitle to explain the book further?

Try:

• Listing at least 10 different titles before deciding
• Checking that your title matches the story
• Speaking the title out loud
• Typing some appealing phrases into an Internet search engine
• Looking through book titles to ensure your title is not already taken
